Here's how I learned to run the night shift at the Oranim bakery when I was a teenager.

First, you do an awful lot of cleaning. A few months of cleaning dough off of machines gives you a really good understanding of what the machines are and how they work and what parts matter.
Then you run the dough mixers for a few months until you get really good at that. Then you learn to make rolls. Then they let you run the computers that control the nightly bread production. If you're lucky, the computer will break down once or twice, and you can learn how to do it manually. That's really cool.

Finally, when you're really really good, they let you hang around with Yussef on the ovens. Yussef was about 100 years old and so good at running the ovens it was scary. When Gabbi tried to show me how to solve the problem of bread sticking to the conveyer belts on the way out of the oven, he ran back and forth like a lunatic for ten minutes, turning knobs, pulling levers, redirecting heat, and burning a few hundred loaves while he struggled to get things under control. But Yussef, facing the same problem, turned one tiny knob on a seemingly-unrelated chimney about one degree to the right. It made no sense, he couldn't explain why it worked, but it did: it solved the problem instantly and suddenly perfect loaves started popping out. It took me another couple of years to really understand the complex relationships between heat and humidity inside an 80 foot tunnel oven, but it would have taken ten more years before I could solve problems as well as Yussef did.

After a year or so doing every job in the bakery, you have credibility with the crew you're leading because they all know you could do their job. You have a complete, holistic understanding of the bakery in a way that no individual does. You've had a chance to watch good managers and bad, you've experienced a lot of the things that can go wrong and seen how to fix them (and how not to fix them), and you can be trusted to drive a fifty million dollar factory that churns out hundreds of thousands of loaves every night.

So they put you in charge of the night shift.

Although Yussef will probably pretty much ignore you no matter how much you think you know.

Tired of figuring out how to install web applications into your Windows Server? Enter Microsoft’s latest installer – Web Application Installer (Web AI). It is still in Beta.

Web AI is supposed to assist you in installing the commonly used web applications like DotNetNuke, Wordpress, Drupal and OSCommerce into your Windows Server. Familiar with the likes of Fantastico and SimpleScripts? Web AI probably works in a similar fashion.

Web AI will first perform a series of checks to acertain that your machine meets the prerequisites of the web application you want to install. It will then download the application from their source and present you with the configuration screen before installing the application.

I don’t really have the need for Web AI currently as my hosting runs on Linux. I will however download it and try it out in one of my virtual environment.

Australia 2nd to China in APAC security software market E-mail by Peter Dinham

The Asia Pacific security market grew at a solid rate of 28.3 percent in 2008 – albeit it, down from 36 percent in 2007 - with Australia becoming the second-largest market for security software in the region after China.

In its latest report on the security software market, Gartner says that despite a slower growth rate, the security market did not suffer a significant impact from the economic downturn, with Australia showing above-average growth of 27.5 percent to reach revenues of A$248.6 million, to be the second-largest market for security software in Asia Pacific, following China.

Gartner senior research analyst, Matthew Cheung said this growth was remarkable considering in the fourth quarter of 2008, global economies began to feel the impact of the credit crunch and the global economic downturn.

“Double digit growth in a challenging economic climate confirms that security remains a key priority for Asia Pacific CIOs and IT security leaders.”

According to Gartner, data security and privacy, along with the need to protect IT infrastructure from the “ever increasing rise in sophisticated and targeted attacks in Asia Pacific”, were among the key drivers fueling the growth of IT security software spending, and for organisations operating in mature markets such as Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, compliance was a major driver.

Cheung said the secure Web gateway (SWG), security information event management (SIEM) and e-mail security market segments demonstrated the highest growth at 48 percent, 31.1 percent and 29.4 percent, respectively.

Consumer security and enterprise endpoint protection remained the two largest sub-segments of the Asia Pacific security market in 2008, totaling US$1.08 billion, according to Cheung.

OpenOffice.Org 3.0 Final was released to the public this week. It is probably the only worthy adversary to the Microsoft Office suite of applications. After going through a long development process, alpha tests and beta tests, The open source and free Office suite of software came out to meet the public.

I guess a lot of people had been waiting for the release. The OpenOffice.Org official site really had problems coping with the amount of traffic it was getting following the release.

OpenOffice.OrgDon’t know what OpenOffice is? Well, it’s a suite of software very similar to Microsoft Office. It’s got word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing applications bundled into a software suite.

Majority of the user out there who uses Microsoft Office probably only use the basic functions of the Microsoft Office suite. Unless you really are a power user, who uses the complex functions built into MS Office, then OpenOffice would certainly be sufficient for you. Here’s the best thing about OpenOffice – It basically does whatever MS Office can do (to a certain extent). It costs nothing too!

I’ve got the software suite downloaded. Will put up my first impression on OpenOffice.Org 3.0 very soon.

Do you blog? More importantly, do you blog with Wordpress? Just a few months after releasing Wordpress 2.6, the development team has just released visuals of Wordpress 2.7. I have to say, they look very very very very impressive indeed.

Wordpress 2.7 will have a redesigned back end interface. The new dashboard looks excellent. The goal of this new interface design is to make the most used screen accessible within only a click or two.
I have only been using Wordpress for slightly more than a year. I think Wordpress is simply the best blogging platform around. Trust me, I’ve tried and tested quite a number of them. I believe this new back end interface will certainly entice more users to move to using Wordpress.

The term includes:

Application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for users.
Firmware which is software programmed resident to electrically programmable memory devices on board mainboards or other types of integrated hardware carriers.
Middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.
System software such as operating systems, which interface with hardware to provide the necessary services for application software.
Software testing is a domain independent of development and programming. It consists of various methods to test and declare a software product fit before it can be launched for use by either an individual or a group. Many tests on functionality, performance and appearance are conducted by modern testers with various tools such as QTP, Load runner and Black box testing, to edit a checklist of requirements against the developed code. ISTQB is a certification that is in demand for engineers who want to pursue a career in testing.[2]
Testware which is an umbrella term or container term for all utilities and application software that serve in combination for testing a software package but not necessarily may optionally contribute to operational purposes. As such, testware is not a standing configuration but merely a working environment for application software or subsets thereof.
Software includes things such as websites, programs or video games, that are coded by programming languages like C or C++.

"Software" is sometimes used in a broader context to mean anything which is not hardware but which is used with hardware, such as film, tapes and records.[3]

JUCE (Jules' Utility Class Extensions) is an all-encompassing C++ class library for developing cross-platform applications.

It's particularly good for creating highly-specialised user interfaces and for handling graphics and sound.

The intended users are developers like me, who are writing large, complex applications in C++ and who would like to use just one clean, high-level API rather than a bunch of different libraries for different purposes or platforms.

Goals
My main goals with JUCE were to make it:

Exhaustive - if I'm writing an application I don't want to bother linking to lots of different libraries. There's a core of basic functionality that everyone needs - Java programmers already have the JDK to do all this, and I wanted something similar for C++.
Literate - class, method and variable names are clear, self-explanatory and written in English rather than abbreviated programmerspeak, to make your code more readable and understandable.
Coherent - it should be easy to find the right classes for the task you need to do - and when you find them, it should be obvious how they should be used. All parts of the codebase should be written in exactly the same style.
Multi-platform - just recompile to run on PC, Mac and Linux (and maybe more in the future). There shouldn't be any surprises when you run your code on a different platform - GUIs should be look pixel-for-pixel the same on all machines and should behave the same way.
Modern C++ - very object-oriented, avoiding macros and older C-style coding wherever possible

The most expensive software, is usually software written specifically for companies. The software for the last company I worked for, cost almost 12 million, and took 3 years to develop, when it was all said and done.
